Former Texas Longhorns WR Medically Retires From Football

Tennessee Volunteers wide receiver Bru McCoy announced on Tuesday via social media that he is medically retiring from football. The decision comes after a challenging recovery from a season-ending ankle injury sustained during the 2023 campaign. McCoy’s announcement marks the end of a college career defined by resilience, talent, and unfortunate injuries.

McCoy suffered a severe ankle injury early in the 2023 season, which forced him to the sidelines for the remainder of the year. Despite the setback, he dedicated himself to a grueling rehabilitation process and made a successful return to the field in 2024. However, it appears lingering complications or medical advice have led him to step away from the sport for good.

“After countless conversations with doctors, family, and my coaches, I’ve made the difficult decision to medically retire from the game I love,” McCoy wrote in a heartfelt statement. He expressed gratitude to the University of Tennessee, his teammates, and fans who supported him throughout his recovery and career.

McCoy transferred to Tennessee from USC and quickly became a key part of the Volunteers’ offense. Known for his physical presence, reliable hands, and leadership, he tallied impressive numbers during his time on the field and left a lasting impression on the program and its supporters.

While his football journey ends earlier than expected, McCoy’s perseverance and contributions to Tennessee football won’t be forgotten. He concluded his statement by saying he looks forward to the next chapter of his life, though he hasn’t yet revealed specific plans. Fans and teammates alike have taken to social media to show their appreciation and support for the wide receiver’s courage and strength.
