Virginia Tech football legends Michael Vick, Tyrod Taylor, and Bruce Smith have made a historic commitment to the Hokies football program, collectively donating more than $10 million. The donation is intended to provide support for the next generation of athletes, empowering them both on and off the field. Each of the alumni cited their personal connections to the university and their desire to give back to the program that played a key role in shaping their careers.
Michael Vick, the star quarterback whose electrifying play helped propel Virginia Tech to the 1999 national championship game, contributed $4 million. The donation will be used to expand and modernize the Hokies’ training facilities, ensuring that current players have the resources necessary to excel. Vick shared his deep gratitude for the university, saying, “Virginia Tech gave me the foundation to chase my dreams, and I want to make sure young athletes today have the same opportunities to grow and succeed.”
Tyrod Taylor, another standout quarterback and NFL veteran, donated $3 million to enhance scholarships and wellness programs for Virginia Tech football players. Taylor’s gift will help provide financial support and academic resources, ensuring that student-athletes have everything they need to balance their athletic commitments with their academic pursuits. Taylor emphasized his connection to Virginia Tech, saying, “My experience at Tech changed my life, and I want to make sure future Hokies get the same chance I had to thrive.”
Bruce Smith, the NFL Hall of Famer and the most dominant defensive player in league history, made a $3.5 million contribution, which will be directed toward renovating the football complex and supporting legacy initiatives. Smith, who played for Virginia Tech in the late 1970s, spoke passionately about how the program impacted his life. “Virginia Tech is where it all started for me. This donation is my way of honoring the past, celebrating the present, and helping to build a brighter future for Hokies football,” he said.
The combined $10.5 million donation is one of the largest contributions by former athletes to a collegiate football program. Virginia Tech’s Director of Athletics, Whit Babcock, praised the generosity of Vick, Taylor, and Smith, noting that their support will significantly enhance the university’s ability to compete at the highest level. “These men represent everything that Hokie football stands for—legacy, leadership, and commitment. Their donations will help ensure that Virginia Tech continues to be a force in college football for years to come.”
