In a recent interview, Oklahoma Sooners head coach Brent Venables was asked whether he would ever consider coaching the Texas Tech Red Raiders. The question stemmed from his long-standing friendship with Texas Tech Athletic Director Kirby Hocutt, who was his teammate during their playing days at Kansas State. While Venables acknowledged their close relationship, he was quick to clarify the nature of their communication, stating, “Kirby and I talk all the time. We’re good friends and former teammates, but that’s where it ends.”

When pressed further on the idea of coaching the Red Raiders, Venables gave a firm and respectful response. “I’m fully committed to Oklahoma. I’ve got a great job and tremendous support from the administration, the players, and the fans. I’m not entertaining any other opportunities,” he said. “I believe in finishing what you start, and right now, I’m focused on building something special here.”

Venables’ coaching philosophy is rooted in loyalty and integrity, values he made clear in his answer. He emphasized that he would never allow outside interest to distract him from his duties. “I would never compromise the integrity of my job for speculation or potential offers. That’s just not who I am. I’m about building relationships, culture, and discipline—and that takes time and full commitment.”

This is not the first time Venables has been linked to other coaching jobs, including at Texas Tech in the past. However, each time his name surfaces in coaching rumors, he remains consistent in his message of loyalty. His coaching journey, including years as a top defensive coordinator before finally accepting the head coaching role at Oklahoma, has been defined by patience and principle.

Ultimately, while the connection to Texas Tech through his friendship with Hocutt will always be part of the story, Brent Venables left little doubt about his future. His response made it clear that his heart—and his energy—remain in Norman, focused entirely on the Sooners and their continued development.
