Breaking News: Tigers Faithful Rejoice, Legendary Coach Gary Pinkel Statue Ceremony Officially Scheduled for Homecoming Weekend

Columbia, MO — In a momentous announcement that has thrilled the University of Missouri community, the long-anticipated statue honoring legendary Tigers head coach Gary Pinkel is officially scheduled to be unveiled during the 2025 Homecoming Weekend festivities. The ceremony will take place on Saturday, October 11, outside Memorial Stadium, where Pinkel’s legacy looms large.

Pinkel, the winningest coach in Mizzou football history, served as head coach from 2001 to 2015. During his tenure, he transformed the program from a struggling Big 12 team to a national contender, leading the Tigers to five division titles and ten bowl appearances, including two trips to the SEC Championship Game. His leadership helped usher Missouri into a new era when the school joined the Southeastern Conference in 2012.

University of Missouri officials confirmed that the statue will stand prominently near the stadium’s east entrance, adjacent to the already existing tributes to Tiger greats. Crafted by renowned sculptor Harry Weber, whose previous works include statues of Cardinals legends Stan Musial and Bob Gibson, the bronze sculpture will depict Pinkel in a signature sideline pose—headset on, arms crossed, eyes scanning the field.

“Coach Pinkel not only redefined Mizzou football, he shaped generations of young men with his leadership and character,” said Mizzou Athletic Director Desireé Reed-Francois. “It is only fitting that his contributions are immortalized where future Tigers and fans will pass by for years to come.”

Pinkel, now 73, expressed deep gratitude and humility upon hearing the official date. “I’m honored beyond words,” he said. “This isn’t just about me—it’s about every player, coach, and fan who believed in what we were building together. Mizzou will always be home.”

The ceremony is expected to draw alumni, former players, and fans from across the country. University officials plan to host a panel discussion featuring Pinkel and some of his former players on Friday evening, followed by a private reception. The official unveiling will occur Saturday morning, several hours before the Tigers kick off against a yet-to-be-announced SEC opponent.

The announcement has already sparked excitement on social media, with the hashtag #PinkelStatue trending locally. Many fans see it as a long-overdue tribute to a coach who left an indelible mark on Missouri athletics.

With the Homecoming theme of “Legends Live On,” the weekend promises to be a heartfelt celebration of one of Mizzou’s most enduring icons.
