CONGRATULATIONS: Tom Osborne, Former Nebraska Cornhuskers Football Coach, Awarded Prestigious National Football Foundation Gold Medal for Outstanding Contribution to Football
The National Football Foundation (NFF) has announced that legendary former Nebraska Cornhuskers head coach Tom Osborne has been awarded the prestigious Gold Medal, the organization’s highest honor, in recognition of his extraordinary contributions to the game of football. The award was presented during the 2025 NFF Annual Awards Dinner in Las Vegas, marking another proud milestone in Osborne’s storied career.
Tom Osborne is one of college football’s most revered figures. Serving as head coach of the Nebraska Cornhuskers from 1973 to 1997, he built a powerhouse program defined by excellence, integrity, and dominance. During his 25-season tenure, Osborne led Nebraska to three national championships (1994, 1995, and 1997), 13 conference titles, and 25 consecutive bowl appearances. His overall record of 255–49–3 ranks among the best in the history of college football.
Beyond the wins and titles, Osborne has long been respected for his leadership, character, and influence on generations of student-athletes. His coaching philosophy emphasized discipline, education, and teamwork—principles that shaped the lives of countless players and contributed to the sport’s development at the collegiate level.
After retiring from coaching, Osborne continued to serve the University of Nebraska and his community. He became Nebraska’s Athletic Director in 2007 and held the position until 2013, overseeing a critical era of transition and growth for the athletic department. He also served in the U.S. House of Representatives from 2001 to 2007, representing Nebraska’s 3rd congressional district.
The NFF Gold Medal, first awarded in 1958, honors individuals who have made significant contributions to the advancement of football and embody the qualities of leadership, sportsmanship, and integrity. Previous recipients include U.S. Presidents, military leaders, and other iconic sports figures. Osborne’s selection continues this tradition of excellence.
In accepting the award, Osborne reflected on the game’s impact on his life and the lives of those he has coached. “Football is more than just a sport—it’s a vehicle for growth, teamwork, and opportunity,” he said. “I’m deeply honored to receive this recognition from the National Football Foundation. It’s a reflection not just of my efforts, but of the many players, coaches, and colleagues who have been part of the journey.”
The award underscores Tom Osborne’s lasting legacy—not only as a football coach, but as a mentor, educator, and leader who helped shape the game of football into what it is today.
