Johnson is investing $8.3 million of his own money to transform a historic mansion in Pittsburgh’s East Liberty neighborhood into a state-of-the-art shelter and resource center for homeless youth.
The newly named “Second Chance House” will provide emergency shelter, transitional housing, job training, mental health services, and educational support for individuals aged 16 to 24 experiencing homelessness. The sprawling 25-room estate, which Johnson purchased earlier this year, will be renovated over the coming months with the help of local contractors, nonprofits, and city officials.
“Pittsburgh has given me so much love and support since day one,” Johnson said during an emotional press conference Friday morning. “I wanted to find a way to give back to the city and do something meaningful—something that would last longer than a football season. These kids deserve safety, opportunity, and hope. I was blessed with a second chance in life, and now it’s my turn to help someone else get theirs.”
Johnson, 24, has quickly become one of the NFL’s most promising young players since signing with the Steelers as an undrafted free agent in 2023.
