BREAKING NEWS: Pittsburgh Steelers Rising Star RB Kaleb Johnson Invests $8.3 Million to Transform House Into Shelter for Homeless Youth in Pittsburgh

PITTSBURGH, PA – May 3, 2025 — In an extraordinary act of compassion and leadership, Pittsburgh Steelers rising star running back Kaleb Johnson has announced a bold and heartfelt initiative to support the city’s most vulnerable residents. Johnson is investing $8.3 million of his own money to transform a historic mansion in Pittsburgh’s East Liberty neighborhood into a state-of-the-art shelter and resource center for homeless youth.

The newly named “Second Chance House” will provide emergency shelter, transitional housing, job training, mental health services, and educational support for individuals aged 16 to 24 experiencing homelessness. The sprawling 25-room estate, which Johnson purchased earlier this year, will be renovated over the coming months with the help of local contractors, nonprofits, and city officials.

“Pittsburgh has given me so much love and support since day one,” Johnson said during an emotional press conference Friday morning. “I wanted to find a way to give back to the city and do something meaningful—something that would last longer than a football season. These kids deserve safety, opportunity, and hope. I was blessed with a second chance in life, and now it’s my turn to help someone else get theirs.”

Johnson, 24, has quickly become one of the NFL’s most promising young players since signing with the Steelers as an undrafted free agent in 2023. Known for his explosive speed, tough running style, and relentless work ethic, Johnson has won the hearts of fans and teammates alike—not only for his performance on the field, but also for his dedication to community service.

The project is being developed in partnership with local organizations including the Pittsburgh Youth Housing Alliance and the Allegheny County Department of Human Services. City leaders, including Mayor Ed Gainey, have praised Johnson’s initiative as a powerful example of athlete-driven philanthropy.

“This is more than a donation—it’s a movement,” said Mayor Gainey. “Kaleb is setting a new standard for what it means to be a community leader. The impact of this shelter will be felt for generations.”

Renovations are expected to be completed by early 2026, with Second Chance House slated to open its doors in the spring. Johnson says he plans to remain actively involved in the program’s development, including mentoring residents and hosting life skills workshops.

“This isn’t just about charity,” Johnson added. “It’s about community, accountability, and making sure no one is left behind.”

Steelers fans and community members are already rallying around the project, signaling strong support for one of the league’s most inspiring young stars.
