Seimone Augustus Named Director of Player Development for LSU Women’s Basketball Team
Baton Rouge, La. — LSU legend and WNBA icon Seimone Augustus is returning home to help guide the next generation of women’s basketball stars. The former All-American has been named the new Director of Player Development for the LSU Tigers women’s basketball team, the university announced Tuesday.
Augustus, a Baton Rouge native, is widely considered one of the greatest players in the history of LSU women’s basketball. Her return to the program marks a full-circle moment for both her and the university. As Director of Player Development, Augustus will play a key role in mentoring student-athletes, enhancing off-court personal and professional growth, and supporting the overall culture and success of the team.
“I’m thrilled to be coming back home to LSU,” Augustus said in a statement. “This university gave me the foundation to build an incredible career, and I’m excited to give back by helping young women grow not only as athletes but as people.”
Head coach Kim Mulkey expressed excitement about Augustus joining her staff. “Seimone is not only one of the greatest to ever wear the purple and gold, but she’s a passionate leader and mentor. Her experience at every level of the game will be invaluable to our players,” Mulkey said.
Augustus starred at LSU from 2002 to 2006, leading the Tigers to three consecutive Final Four appearances and earning back-to-back Naismith College Player of the Year awards in 2005 and 2006. She finished her collegiate career with 2,702 points, ranking first in LSU history at the time of her graduation.
Following college, she was the No. 1 overall pick in the 2006 WNBA Draft and enjoyed a stellar professional career, primarily with the Minnesota Lynx. She won four WNBA championships and was an eight-time All-Star. Augustus also captured three Olympic gold medals with Team USA.
Since retiring as a player in 2021, Augustus has remained involved in basketball, previously serving as an assistant coach for the Los Angeles Sparks. Her new role at LSU will emphasize player mentorship, life skills, and leadership development, aligning with Mulkey’s vision of building not just elite athletes, but well-rounded individuals.
LSU fans and alumni have welcomed the news with enthusiasm, seeing Augustus’s return as a homecoming for one of the school’s most cherished athletes.
With Augustus now part of the coaching staff, the Tigers add yet another layer of championship pedigree to their program as they continue building toward future success.
“Once a Tiger, always a Tiger,” Augustus said. “It feels good to be home.”
