BREAKING NEWS: Netflix Releases “The Underdog,” a Highly Anticipated Documentary About Indiana Hoosier Men’s Basketball Legend Steve Alford

April 28, 2025 — In a move that has electrified basketball fans and documentary enthusiasts alike, Netflix has announced the release of The Underdog, a compelling new documentary chronicling the life and career of Indiana Hoosiers legend Steve Alford. The highly anticipated film is slated for release on May 15, 2025, and promises an in-depth look at one of college basketball’s most celebrated figures.

Directed by Emmy Award-winner Jennifer McCauley, The Underdog delves into Alford’s remarkable journey — from his early days shooting hoops in small-town New Castle, Indiana, to leading the Indiana Hoosiers to an NCAA championship under the iconic coach Bob Knight in 1987. The film also follows his career beyond playing, documenting his rise through the coaching ranks and his lasting influence on the game.

Netflix released a teaser trailer earlier this morning, igniting excitement across social media. Within minutes, hashtags like #TheUnderdog and #SteveAlford were trending nationwide. The teaser features vintage footage of Alford’s record-breaking seasons, interviews with former teammates, coaches, and even rare behind-the-scenes moments from pivotal games.

“Steve Alford’s story isn’t just about basketball; it’s about perseverance, leadership, and heart,” McCauley said in a statement. “We wanted to showcase how an ‘underdog’ mentality shaped not only his career but also the lives of those he inspired.”

Alford, known for his deadly shooting accuracy and leadership on the court, was a two-time All-American and a key part of Indiana’s rich basketball tradition. His performance in the 1987 NCAA Tournament — where he scored 23 points in the championship game against Syracuse — remains one of the most iconic moments in Hoosier history.

In addition to archival footage, The Underdog includes new interviews with basketball luminaries like Coach K, Larry Bird, and Charles Barkley, as well as emotional reflections from Alford himself. The documentary also touches on the pressures Alford faced, the controversies he encountered as a coach, and his enduring legacy in the sport.

Netflix confirmed that the documentary will be available globally, with a special premiere event set for Bloomington, Indiana — home of Indiana University — just days before its streaming debut.

Early buzz suggests The Underdog could be a major contender for awards next season, as Netflix continues its strong run of producing acclaimed sports documentaries.
